Paper can be made without trees. One acre of kenaf, a plant related to cotton, produces as much fibre in one year as an acre of yellow pine does in twenty. Paper can also be made of material such as hemp. The pulp made from non-tree sources is also less expensive than that made from trees.

There is a wide variety of alternative ‘fibres’ that can work as an alternative to wood-pulp paper. Sources for tree-free paper include: agricultural residues – for example, sugar cane bagasse, husks and straw. fibre crops and wild plants – such as bamboo, kenaf, hemp, jute, and flax.

Some of the most commonly used softwood trees for paper making include spruce, pine, fir, larch and hemlock, and hardwoods such as eucalyptus, aspen and birch.

The long, strong fibers of softwood trees like Southern yellow pines and Douglas-firs are used to make toilet paper strong. The shorter fibers of hardwood trees like oaks and maples give toilet paper its soft texture.

How Do You Make Cotton Rag Paper?

1. Prepared by being cut/ripped in small sections.
2. Boiled with water and baking soda, then rinsed and drained.
3. Blended to make pulp.
4. Poured into a large container of warm water and mixed.
5. Laid out at the desired thickness to drain excess water.
6. Fully dry by hanging.

The hot water will start to turn the carton into pulp. Place the lid on the blender and blend the paper pieces and water until it creates a soup-like mixture. Place the frame over a large bowl. Pour the paper pulp over the frame and use the rolling pin to spread the pulp evenly across the frame.

The most common way to dry paper is to layer your paper between several sheets of absorbent smooth towels or couching sheets, and then to top the whole thing off with some heavy books.
