Commanding officers may authorize the optional wear of the Navy certified desert tan or coyote brown rough-side-out leather non-safety boots when wear of safety boots is not required. Sailors must buy these optional brown boots if they are not issued them by their commands as organizational clothing.

1101 – General Information. 1. POLICY. The purpose of the U.S. Navy Uniform Regulations is to: (1) Provide descriptions of all authorized U.S. Navy uniforms and components, and (2) Provide guidance for all Navy activities prescribing uniform wear in order to present a uniform image world‑wide.

Normally, the most sailors wear steel-toe boots. However, every so often a new instruction is released that permits servicemen to wear less protective footwear as it did back in 2010 with the Navy Working Uniform Type I.

The NWU is not a liberty uniform. After working hours, NWU wear is not permitted while conducting official business when business attire is appropriate and participating in social events. Also, consumption of alcohol in NWUs on base is authorized except where regional commanders promulgate otherwise.

Smartwatches and fitness trackers are subject to applicable security regulations. Authorized watch and fitness tracker colors when in uniform are solid black, brown, dark green, grey, navy blue, tan, white, copper, gold (metal), silver (metal), gold and silver combination (metal) only.”

b. Navy certified brown leather shoes and khaki socks are optional for Personnel E-7 and above with khaki uniforms.

(h) The use of an earpiece, blue tooth technology, headsets or hands-free device while in Uniform indoors or outdoors is prohibited unless specifically authorized for the execution of official duties (e.g. NSW, security personnel, detailers, etc.).

Ripped, torn or otherwise overly distressed clothing is not considered acceptable. Those distressed jeans might be OK, but clothing that has clearly been through the wringer should be left at home.

GENERAL. When traveling on leave, TAD or transfer, service dress blues may be worn during any season. Navy personnel traveling aboard any military organic or commercial contracted (chartered) aircraft may wear civilian clothing when traveling on regular/emergency leave or Space A travel.

Under the new AR 670-1, Soldiers traveling commercially on official business are authorized to wear the Army Combat Uniform, or ACU. Soldiers wearing their uniform may enter a liquor store to purchase package liquor, for instance. They may not, however, wear their uniform while drinking in a bar.

The pant color of the Navy dress uniform will always match the color of the jacket or jumper being worn. Clean and polished black dress shoes are always worn with any Navy dress uniform. White shoes will be worn with the white dress uniform. The belt is black and made of plain cloth or webbing.

The Navy service uniform is authorized to be worn for such things as office work, standing watch, for liberty, business onshore, and when prescribed by commanders as the uniform of the day. The Navy service uniform comes in two different colors.

May be prescribed for wear year-round to all official functions when Dinner Dress or Full Dress Uniforms are not prescribed and civilian equivalent dress is coat and tie.
