In an emergency, to purify drinking water, two methods are most often used. They are boiling the water and adding chlorine (household bleach, such as Regular Clorox) to it. Most emergency experts and health officials suggest a mixture of 8 drops of bleach to a gallon of generally clear water for best results.

Filtration – The clear water on top passes through filters composed of sand, gravel and charcoal to remove dissolved particles such as dust, parasites, bacteria, viruses and chemicals. Disinfection – Chlorine or chloramine is added to kill parasites, bacteria, viruses and germs.

Boil water, if you do not have bottled water. Boiling is sufficient to kill pathogenic bacteria, viruses and protozoa (WHO, 2015). If water is cloudy, let it settle and filter it through a clean cloth, paperboiling water towel, or coffee filter. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute.

Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one full minute. Let the water cool before drinking. Add two drops of household bleach per gallon to maintain water quality while in storage.

Use only standard, household, unscented liquid chlorine bleach. Do not use bleach labeled color-‐safe, scented, or splashless; bleach tablets; pool tablets; or non-‐chlorine bleach.

1/3 cup bleach per 1 gallon of water OR 2 tablespoons bleach per 1 quart water. This will give you a 1000+ ppm disinfecting solution. After cleaning the area with detergent, spray or wipe with surfaces with the disinfectant. Make sure to allow surfaces to fully air dry.

1. Carefully pour the bleach into the spray bottle or jar first, then add the water. Mixing the solution in this order will prevent the bleach from splashing up on you.
2. Place the lid tightly on the container.
3. Gently mix it by shaking.
4. After mixing, your solution is ready to use.

Unless you’re using a spray cleaner that comes with added bleach, don’t pour the diluted bleach solution into a spray bottle and spray it on surfaces. This corrosion might give the spray a rusty color and can reduce the disinfecting power of the bleach.

How to mix the bleach solution: 1 ml (1/4 teaspoon) household bleach to 500 ml (2 cups) water, or.

Pour water and hydrogen peroxide in a 16-ounce spray bottle. Drop in desired essential oil blend, optional. Fill bottle with ethyl alcohol, about 12 ounces, and shake well to combine. Spray and wipe down on high-touch areas or anywhere you’d like to disinfect.

How to Make DIY Antibacterial Surface Spray

1. ¼ cup 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol.
2. ¼ cup white vinegar.
3. ¼ distilled water.
4. 20 drops thieves oil or another disinfecting essential oil.
