Bloods wear red, Crips wear blue. There are thousands of gangs in the U.S. and most identify with one or more colors of every description.

It’s popularly said the name Bloods is an acronym for “Brotherly Love Overcomes Overrides and Destruction.” However, the Bloods, given their origins as a counter-Crip alliance, likely take their name from 1960s slang, blood, short for blood brother, referring to a “fellow (young) black person.”

A common greeting among Bloods members is “SuWoop!” (representing a police siren) and members will often say “Blaat!” (representing the sound of automatic gunfire) to announce their presence. The numbers 0, 3, and 1 are very significant to East Coast affiliated Bloods and will appear in their graffiti and tattoos.

“The Crip walk is a no-no,” Crenshaw High School Principal Isaac Hammond said. He and other educators complain that the dance glamorizes gang life and could trigger retaliation from rivals such as the Bloods, even if most youngsters C-walking are not in the Crips, or any gang at all.

The Crip walk’s origins are lost in the mists. But young men are perpetually eager to outdo their peers in discovering the next underground phenomenon, and you couldn’t get more underground than the c-walk. After all, it’s a dance that could still get you killed if you do it in the wrong place.
