Extant trogloxene animals include rats, raccoons, opiliones, and bears. During the third interglacial epoch and the fourth glacial advance, a large number of now extinct species inhabited the caves of the world. Cave bears, cave leopards, cave lions, and cave hyenas are examples of these extinct animals.

Blombos Cave

Archaeologists say they have discovered the world’s oldest known cave painting: a life-sized picture of a wild pig that was made at least 45,500 years ago in Indonesia. The finding, described in the journal Science Advances on Wednesday, provides the earliest evidence of human settlement of the region.

Grand Caverns, formerly known as Weyer’s Cave, is located in the central Shenandoah Valley in the town of Grottoes, Virginia, United States. A limestone cavern, it claims the distinction of being America’s oldest show cave, in operation since 1806.

Cave painting Early humans may have used art as a way of helping themselves in their struggle for survival. Paintings of animals on cave walls are common. Perhaps this was thought to bring success when hunting or acted as a call for help from a spirit world the people believed in.

Ancient peoples decorated walls of protected caves with paint made from dirt or charcoal mixed with spit or animal fat.

Most cave art consists of paintings made with either red or black pigment. The reds were made with iron oxides (hematite), whereas manganese dioxide and charcoal were used for the blacks.

Hunting was critical to early humans’ survival, and animal art in caves has often been interpreted as an attempt to influence the success of the hunt, exert power over animals that were simultaneously dangerous to early humans and vital to their existence, or to increase the fertility of herds in the wild.

In prehistoric art, the term “cave painting” encompasses any parietal art which involves the application of colour pigments on the walls, floors or ceilings of ancient rock shelters. A monochrome cave painting is a picture made with only one colour (usually black) – see, for instance, the monochrome images at Chauvet.

The art at Lascaux was both painted on and engraved into the uneven walls of the cave, the artists working with the edges and curves of the walls to enhance their compositions. The resulting impressive displays depict mainly animals, but also a significant amount of abstract symbols, and even a human.
