Apart from coconut and palm trees, you can make bonsais from any Indian tree. Preferably, choose a small-leaved tree as it adds to the miniaturised effect. The various ficus varieties, rain trees, and blueberries are a few of the many options.

The Japanese art of bonsai originated from the Chinese practice of penjing. From the 6th century onwards, Imperial embassy personnel and Buddhist students from Japan visited and returned from mainland China, bringing back souvenirs including container plantings.

The damage should heal itself in a few months. Keep the newly wired tree out of direct sunlight for 2-4 days and water as needed. After 2-3 months, when the tree has formed to the desired shape, carefully remove the wire.

To grow a bonsai from seed or sapling, be prepared to spend between five and 10 years stunting its growth before it’s ready for more stylistic shaping and training. This process is notoriously arduous, and we recommend newer growers start with established specimens.

Pruning and wiring bonsai is usually started in the second year and onward, but selecting a good basic shape will save you time and extra work later. Choose a pot that will complement the color of the foliage and balance the tree’s emerging design.
