The verses will have different content from verse to verse but they are often the same length throughout the song. For example, you may have one verse that talks about love and one verse that talks about sadness, but both verses will be five to six lines long.

Verse generally can be used for those specific instances as well as used broadly to refer to poetry in total. By comparison, poetry is usually defined as a literary work in metrical form; and most dictionaries employ the word “verse” in the definition or as a synonym. The word verse came from the Latin word versus, which means “a turning.” The original definition of verse developed in Middle English to mean a single line of a psalm, and later broadened to refer to a single line of any poem.

Efforts to define the difference between poetry and verse (like efforts to define the difference between poetry and prose) have been with us for a long time. Verse, in this usage, means unsophisticated or poorly written poetry. But quality of writing is not the real difference between the two.

Simply speaking, a verse novel (or novel in verse) is exactly what the name implies: a novel that is told in verse rather than prose. Verse novels, on the other hand–whether they are written as one long poem or a collection of shorter poems–must combine poetry with story.

“Verses” is abbreviated vv., especially when referring to the Bible. “Versus” is abbreviated v. in legal documents and legal citations. “Versus” is abbreviated vs.

Basically, a line is specifically one exact line, but verses vary in length, and are more defined as verses by their ability to stand alone as one sentence.
