Although the intensity of the JV team may vary from place to place, most junior varsity teams consist of players who are in their freshman and sophomore years in school, though occasionally upperclassmen may play on JV teams. Complete 16 core courses:

• Four years of English.

Year / Grade Placement

A Board of Education may permit pupils in grades no lower than seventh to compete on any senior high school team, or permit senior high pupils to compete on any teams in grades no lower than seventh, provided the pupils are placed at levels of competition appropriate to their physiological maturity, physical fitness.

Schools with a four-year high school enrollment of 99 or less may draw upon the 8th grade for varsity competition in all sports except football, ice hockey and wrestling, while schools with a four-year high school enrollment of 49 or less may also draw upon the 7th grade.

Age – Students must be under 19 years old to play school sports except that if students turn 19 on or after Sept. 1 of a current school year, they can finish that school year. 6th graders must be under 13 years of age; 7th-graders must be under 14 years of age, and 8th-graders must be under 15 years old.

If a player gets playing time in at least 6 varsity games then they will earn a Varsity letter. Boys Tennis – If you are chosen to be on the Varsity team you will get a letter.

Letter jackets are almost never purchased before a student has earned a letter. Recently, many student-athletes have been awarded letters during their sophomore and sometimes freshman year, leading to the need for a jacket much sooner. Still, the actual jacket is not usually purchased until the sophomore year.
