The “Yooperlites” were discovered by Erik Rintamaki in 2017. He was credited with the find and is now selling them for $32 per pound.

Rintamaki says it all started in 2017 when he went out on a beach in Lake Superior with a UV light and discovered tons of these glowing rocks. To the naked eye, they look like gray rocks, but under the UV light, the mineral composite makes the rocks glow.

Yooperlite is a unique formation of a fairly common element, fluorescing sodalite. What is uncommon is its presentation to the world at this time.

Yooperlite is a name for rocks that consist of a syenite-rich fluorescent sodalite. Sodalite is mineral that fluoresces an orange or yellow color under ultra violet light. Do these Yooperlight stones really glow in the dark? These rocks are grey in nature when you see them on the beach but glow when under a UV light.

Where Do You Find Yooperlites®? Yooperlites® have been found in different areas throughout Michigan but are most prominent in the Upper Peninsula along Lake Superior. The beaches near the Grand Marais area, as well as in the Keweenaw Peninsula, are popular destinations for those searching for Yooperlites®.

In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I’ve found Yooperlites anywhere from Whitefish Point to Grand Marais. I’ve also found them in gravel pits in Minnesota. Other folks have reported finding them on Lake Michigan near the Chicago area and also near the Point Betsie Area.

Scapolite can fluoresce under longwave UV light, such as black light. It commonly glows orange or yellow and, in rare instances, red.

I was told (I forget who told me) that raw gold will glow a greenish-yellow color when you shine ultraviolet light on it.

The mysterious light that is created when you forcefully rub two quartz crystals together is a known property of certain crystals called triboluminescence (see definition below). You can also produce the triboluminescence effect by chewing on Wint O Green Lifesavers in the dark.

Material scientists believe the light results from a recombination of electrical charges that become separated when crystals are fractured. When the charges get back together, the air is ionized, producing a flash of light.

Some other minerals, such as quartz, are triboluminescent, emitting light when rubbed together. Wint-O-Green Life Savers work especially well for creating such sparks, because wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate) is fluorescent and converts ultraviolet light into blue light.

The act of crushing sugar involves energy and it seems that some of that energy is being converted into light. Scientists think that when these charges shoot back together again, some of that energy used to separate them is converted into visible light.

When the adhesive gets pulled apart, electrons become excited and give off photons, similar to when the sugar gets crushed. These excite nitrogen molecules in the air and release light, some of it visible.

Pour granulated sugar into a blender or food processor. Blend the sugar until it is a fine, fluffy powdered sugar. Use powdered sugar immediately or save it for later. You may want to sift the sugar before use for clump free, super fluffy sugar.

If you have run out of icing sugar or can’t find any to buy, you can make your own by whizzing granulated or caster sugar in a food processor, powerful blender, standard blender, coffee or spice grinder, or more laboriously, in a mortar and pestle.

A small amount of heat melts the sugar just enough so it holds the shape. The cubes then are dried quickly to remove the moisture. Assuming that the water is pure, the cube sugar is almost identical to granulated sugar.
