River Network The major rivers discharging into western Hudson Bay are the Hayes, Nelson, Churchill, Kazan and Thelon.

It originates in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York and flows southward through the Hudson Valley to the Upper New York Bay between New York City and Jersey City, eventually draining into the Atlantic Ocean at New York Harbor.

There have also been some non-astronaut fatalities during spaceflight-related activities. As of 2020, there have been 30 fatalities in incidents regarding spaceflight.

There are parts of the river that are less safe to splash around in such as near stormwater pipes where toxins, oils, bacteria and garbage runoffs overflow into the river after it rained, according to NYC’s clean water advocate group Riverkeeper.

Other ongoing pollution problems affecting the river include: accidental sewage discharges, urban runoff, heavy metals, furans, dioxin, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Numerous factories that once lined the Hudson River poured garbage and industrial waste directly into the river.

People shouldn’t swim, boat or recreate in these areas because of safety concerns from boat traffic and operating equipment. PCB levels in the river water might also be higher when dredging and debris removal equipment are operating in these areas.

And, contrary to popular belief, recreational swimming in the Hudson is not illegal. Before every event, swim organizers conduct their own tests of the water, while Riverkeeper also tests samples once a month during the recreational season (between May and October) at 74 locations in the Hudson River estuary.

In water, it is an indicator of fecal contamination, which can carry pathogens that make people who contact the water sick. That means the river may be contaminated in one area but safe for swimming 10 miles away, and those levels could change a few days later.
