Unfortunately, the Chesapeake Bay faces serious problems due to human activities, including polluted stormwater runoff, over-fertilization and pollution from animal wastes, deforestation, wetland destruction from agricultural, urban, and suburban development, and sea level rise caused by global climate change.

According to the Chesapeake Bay Program, there are at least 12 species of sharks found in the Bay. While some are quite abundant, others are very rare. The five most common sharks in the Bay include the sandbar shark, bull shark, sand tiger shark, smooth dogfish, and spiney dogfish.

Very crowded with a lot of visitors from Baltimore and DC. Is a surprisingly large beach so pretty easy to find a spot. The water was clean and calm but lots of jellyfish.

Sandy Point State Park is a public recreation area on Chesapeake Bay, located at the western end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The state park is known for the popularity of its swimming beach, with annual attendance exceeding one million visitors.

Do you have jellyfish? Because Sandy Point beach is located directly on the Chesapeake Bay, jellyfish can be found in the water during the warm summer months, mainly from late July through the first frost.

Park admission is $5 per person on weekends and holidays and $4 per person on weekdays. Summer has not been cancelled. It’s alive and well at Sandy Point State Park and a host of parks throughout Annapolis and Anne Arundel County!

There are entrance fees (see below) that are paid either using coins (quarters or dollars) or credit cards (Visa/Mastercard). See below for park entry costs (Updated for Spring 2021). Sandy Point, which opened in the 1950’s, is located just to the western side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which looms over the beach.

Coastal erosion, over the last 10 years, has washed away the sandy spit at Sandy Point, making it inaccessible to vehicles between mid and high tide from Farnborough Beach. For safe beach driving, plan your trip two hours either side of low tide. • Take care when launching or retrieving your boat.

Sandy Point State Park is located along the Northwestern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, just beyond Annapolis off of Rt. The park is open 7 a.m. to sunset. *Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, Lifeguards are not on duty, though swimming is still permitted at your own risk.

During the summer months, the beach area can be quite crowded. Enjoy watching the bay traffic moving under the Bay Bridge from this spot though; great photo opportunities. I’ve never visited Sandy Point in the summer, but if it’s anything like today, my wife and I will definitely go back.

If you’re not wanting to drive far from D.C. for a beach getaway, then the sandy shores at Sandy Point State Park is the place for you. This beach is the closest beach to D.C. on this list. Only 38 miles away from the city center, you can enjoy a day with your toes in the sand after just an hour drive.

North Beach is located in the town of the same name on Chesapeake Bay. There are no lifeguards on duty so swimming is at your own risk. Pets are not permitted on the beach. The beach is free for residents; non-residents must pay a fee.

Amenities: North Beach offers beautiful views year round and offers a number of recreational activities to enjoy for the entire family. During the warmer months, activities include swimming, biking, picnicking, and beach volleyball.

Fees are charged from May to October – $6 Resident/$8 Non-Resident for Day. Access is free if you enter on foot or bike. Gates are open from 9am-9pm. There is no charge to park November-April.

North Beach is the least touristy part of Miami Beach. Like South Beach, North Beach has a huge variety of neighborhood scales intermingled with each other. Quiet and removed from the action, it’s also the most tailor-made for locals, and still has something of a small town feel.

Considering only the crime rate, Chesapeake Beach is safer than the Maryland state average and safer than the national average.

The Chesapeake Bay is very polluted and the minimal beach access in Chesapeake Beach makes the idea of a day away at the beach undesirable. Other than the plans for the beach day, there is a water park in the town limits that is clean and fun, and a few small shops that are locally owned.
