Hialeah is now the only full time quarter horse venue in Florida. In 2011 all Florida tracks ran their respected meets including Hialeah Park which got the go ahead to add racino gaming. If anything is for sure about Florida it’s that, it’s the dog racing capitol of the United States.

Miami Gardens
Formerly known as Calder Race Course, Gulfstream Park West is located in Miami Gardens, Fla. next to Pro Player Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins. Formerly known as Calder Race Course, Gulfstream Park West is located in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Calder’s first racing day was May 4, 1971. Churchill Downs acquired the track in 1999 and Saturday marked the end of its six-year lease with Gulfstream Park. The track’s barns will remain in use until the spring of 2021.

According to Bill Finley of the Thoroughbred Daily News, Calder’s future changed course when it was purchased for $87 million in 1999 by Churchill Downs. Over the years, Churchill became less interested in racing and more interested in casino play. In 2015, Churchill tore down the grandstand.

In November 2018, Floridians voted overwhelmingly to pass Amendment 13, which would ban greyhound racing in the state by the end of 2020. Since then, nine Florida tracks have already ended the practice, leaving the final two in the state running about 1,200 dogs down to the wire.

Since 2014, the racing operation has been leased by Calder’s owner, Churchill Downs Inc., to Gulfstream Park’s owners, The Stronach Group, which renamed the track Gulfstream Park West.

Note to Users: The proper terminology for the warm, northward flowing ocean current offshore east central Florida is the “Florida Current.” This current is part of the Gulf Stream System. The actual Gulf Stream Current begins off of Cape Hatteras and extends east northeastward across the Atlantic.

Calder Race Course held it’s first race on May 6th, 1971 and held its last race on November 28th, 2020. After nearly 50 years of racing and through several new owners and even a name change (Gulfstream Park West), the track will close its doors.

Gulfstream Park East racing year round except (October-November) Wednesday through Sunday.

But this divide over Florida foreshadows the next chapter. In 2021, greyhound racing will take place at just four tracks in three states: Arkansas, Iowa and West Virginia. The two dog tracks in Arkansas and Iowa are expected to shutter by 2022, leaving two tracks in West Virginia as the last vestiges.

Gulfstream Park West was opened as Calder Racecourse in 1971 with a 1-mile dirt track and a 7-furlong turf course. In 2015 it was decided that, under management of the Stronach Group, the track would operate as Gulfstream Park West. Biggest stakes: The Carl G.
