Between 1937 and 2012, an estimated 1,400 bodies were recovered of people who had jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge, located in the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States. In 2013, 118 potential jumpers were talked down from their attempt and did not jump.

Golden Gate Bridge Toll Increases Starting July 1, 2020 On July 1, 2020, the Golden Gate Bridge toll will increase by 35 cents for FasTrak from $7.35 to $7.70. Pay As You Go rates increase from $8.20 to $8.40 and the invoice rate is $8.70.

If you don’t pay your toll or invoice by its due date, you will receive a delinquent notice. The following is a schedule of penalties: First notice issued: toll plus $25 penalty. Second (delinquent) notice issued: toll plus $70 ($25 penalty plus $45 late fee).

Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge… It’s free to walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge. The pedestrian walkway is the east sidewalk that runs along the east (bay) side of the bridge. Bikes ride on either side, according to the daily schedule. Drivers pay a toll ($7.25) but only coming into San Francisco.

A FasTrak toll tag may be used as payment in any lane when crossing this bridge. You may also use pay-as-you-go license plate accounts and one-time payment accounts in any lane. Cash is only accepted at FasTrak retail locations with a cash payment kiosk. There is no stopping to pay tolls at this bridge.

Officials said nearly 112,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day, so if you add 25 cents to each car, they’ll make an extra $28,000 a day, which will be over $10 million a year.

San Francisco Bay in Northern California is one of the largest and most altered estuaries within the United States. This poster shows views of the sea floor in west-central San Francisco Bay around Alcatraz and Angel Islands, underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, and through its entrance from the Pacific Ocean.

A marvel of modern engineering, the Golden Gate Bridge is 1.7 miles long and 90 feet wide. Its 4,200-foot main span between the two towers was the longest for a suspension bridge until 1981, while its 746-foot towers made it the tallest bridge of any type until 1993.

It was also the first bridge constructed using steel wire, which was spun on sight. Spanning the East River and connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan, it was also the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1903, and was designed to last 200 years. It is one of the most resilient bridges ever built.

The deepest part of the bay, the bottom of the water under the bridge, will never be visible to a swimmer, and what’s unseen will always provoke terror. What’s more, the Pacific is teeming with sea lice, microscopic parasites that cause skin rashes, headache, chills, fever, and nausea.

At several locations in the Bay, currents can be as strong as six knots. As a recreational paddler, you paddle about three knots—four if racing or terrified. Use caution when paddling in a strong current; you could lose control of your boat and capsize or get swept out the Golden Gate.

The water is measured at Fort Point, which is near the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The ocean off San Francisco is at its warmest from mid August to late September when the temperature averages 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 degrees Celsius).

Expected Survival Time in Cold Water

To the east, heat in the valley creates thinner air and low pressure. The valley becomes like a vacuum that wants to be filled by the heavier marine layer. It pulls that layer over San Francisco, which typically makes the city cooler than other parts of California — and the country — in the summer.

It was found that 29% of people from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada don’t call San Francisco by its proper name, and “San Fran” and “Frisco” are nicknames that are loathed by residents. They also dislike “Baghdad by the Bay,” “Fog City” and “The City.”
