While it is not endangered, the narwhal is considered “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, which gauges a species’ risk of extinction.

The Narwhal’s Arctic habitat is highly sensitive to climatic changes that result in increased atmospheric and ocean water temperatures. The Narwhal’s annual migration from the north in summer to more southerly overwintering habitats exposes them to sea ice which is constantly expanding and receding.

What threats do narwhals face? Oil and gas development and climate change pose threats to narwhals. Increased development means more shipping vessels, creating more opportunities for collisions and more underwater noise that can interfere with communication among the whales.

In the summer, retreating ice allows narwhals and their newly born calves to access their summering grounds in the sheltered inlets, bays, and fjords along the Canadian Arctic coast and northwest Greenland.

Narwhals are becoming extinct for three main reasons. The primary catalyst for the series of events that have led to decrease narwhal populations is unprecedentedly rapid climate change. An additional result of climate change is the reduction in the population of the Narwhal’s primary prey, the Greenland halibut.

Reputation: Narwhals are mythical creatures – unicorns of the sea. They are “toothed whales” so obviously have teeth in their mouths. They spear their food, and are as aggressive and dangerous as they look.

The narwhal’s tusk is used among males to compete for females, and for a variety of other ways; including fighting. While I never heard of an animal “stabbing” or “impaling” another one there is some evidence that they can leave serious scars and wounds, suggesting this is not a crazy idea.

The narwhal tusk is actually one of two teeth. In males, the tusk protrudes from the upper, left lip. While most male narwhals have one tusk, in a few rare cases they can have two, like in the narwhal pictured below.

What sets Narwhals apart from all other marine mammals is their long ivory tusks. The tusk, which can reach lengths of up to 10 ft (3 m), is actually a tooth and sensory organ. With millions of nerve endings running the length of the tusk, the Narwhal is able to gather information from the surrounding waters.

Only about 15 percent of females grow a tusk which typically is smaller than a male tusk, with a less noticeable spiral.

Predators of the narwhal include killer whales and, to a lesser extent, polar bears and walruses. Inuit hunt them mainly for the ivory tusk and the skin, which is rich in vitamin C.

Narwhal tusks Scientists are not certain of the tusk’s purpose, but some believe it is prominent in mating rituals, perhaps used to impress females or to battle rival suitors. Females sometimes grow a small tusk of their own, but it does not become as prominent as the male’s.

But unlike their relatives, the narwhal has no “chewing” teeth, just the one tusk and an occasional backup. Interestingly enough, this second tooth can occasionally grow into a second tusk and either one is able to grow up to nine feet long.

Killer whales and polar bears have been known to attack and eat Narwhals, and at least one Greenland shark has been captured with narwhal remains in its stomach, but it remains unclear if it hunted or scavenged that meal. Conservation scientists consider the narwhal to be near threatened with extinction.

Narwhals have been a protected species since 1972 and importation is prohibited. We have a selection of old tusks for sale that were imported in the mid-1900s and are legal to sell anywhere in the U.S. (with the exception of New Jersey). These are extremely rare if you can find one.

Narwhals are sometimes known as the “unicorns” of the ocean because of the long “tusks” that protrude from the animals’ heads, but scientists have long been stumped about the function of this mysterious appendage — until now. Drone footage of wild narwhals has revealed that the whales use their tusks to hunt fish.

While narwhals had become trapped by ice in the past, it was unusual for so many to be stuck in the same place at the same time, Pelley said. The narwhal population in the area was in good condition, he said. Narwhal’s tusks can stretch up to 10 feet.

The Narwhal did however evolve from a species of whale. It is a variation of a whale and comes from a large family. The whale family actually has more than 70 variations and all have a common ancestor including the Narwhal.

Brandon Laforest, a senior specialist of Arctic species and ecosystems with WWF-Canada, explained why narwhals have been such a mysterious species. “They don’t jump like other whales. They are also notoriously skittish,” said Laforest.
