This is true of Oaks, Walnut, Cherry and most other merchantable timber species. However, with Hard Maple, it is actually the sapwood that is valuable for lumber and other wood products, not the heartwood. Red maple is naturally found in Georgia from the counties in the mountains to the furthest depths of the southern coastal plain. Bigleaf maple is a commercially important hardwood timber for the United States’ west coast, where it is virtually the only commercial maple species in the region. It is considered to be in the grouping of soft maples, and its wood is lighter, softer, and weaker than that of hard maple.

The leaves of this species live up to the name and are larger than those on any other maple species. They feature the lobes and palmate shape found on most maple trees. Each leaf can be more than a foot across. Sometimes, leaves can even be two feet across!

Mature bigleaf maple trees range from 50 to 100 ft in height (160 ft maximum) and 12 to 36 in. The root system of bigleaf maple is shallow and spreading on wet or shallow soils.

Diagnostic Characters: Big-Leaf Maple is easily recognizable by its large 5-lobed leaves–often 12-inches (30cm) across, but sometimes much smaller– 6” (15cm). In the spring, greenish-yellow flower clusters emerge before or with the leaves.

Bigleaf maple characteristics The best bigleaf maple trees to tap are those with a wide-open crown and a trunk diameter between 4 and 18 inches. Young maples forming clusters of multiple shoots, or suckers, tend to work well due to their smooth bark and expansive root system.

Bigleaf maple is confined to riparian zones, moist canyons [13,81], and other sites with permanent water [151] in central and southern California [20,81,173]. It is occasionally reported on dry sites. It is a minor species, for example, on the Dead Indian Plateau of southwestern Oregon.
