Lithium batteries last longer and self-discharge slower than alkaline batteries. For this reason, they’re a good choice for items that aren’t used as frequently, since the battery won’t fully discharge between uses. Purchase more batteries than you need to power your 9V devices so you always have a few spare on hand.

Energizer batteries are the best of the best. This Ultimate Lithium 9 volt battery will no doubt last a very, very long time. The design is 100% leak proof. It also boasts that it performs in extreme temperatures from -4*F to 140*F AND has a 10 year shelf life.

Energizer says a 10-year shelf life, but we wouldn’t recommend waiting that long. The LA522 9V battery will pretty safely get you 6-7 years. But again, always err on the side of caution and replace fire alarm batteries more frequently as your budget allows.

Mixing a lithium battery with an alkaline battery will not improve device performance. In fact, it will reduce performance and may even damage your device or cause battery leakage or rupture. As well, do not mix different battery brands within a device. We recommend using the same type of batteries within a device.”

A Lithium Battery may cost 5 times more than an Alkaline Battery, but it will last for about 8 to 10 times longer in operation, with a similar shelf life when not in use.
