Information. Morgana is a woman who appears in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. She is the sister of Ursula, but Ursula is worse than Morgana. She was loved less than Ursula, because Ursula had more powers than Morgana did.

But in The Little Mermaid, Ursula is actually Ariel’s mother (same goes for her sisters), whose “curse” is in fact a parting gift to get at least one of her daughters out of the grasp of King Triton, who is a violent, abusive father.

Ursula is very manipulative and has a talent of making great sense and making great points when trying to strike a deal. She treats the eels like children and refer to them as “babies” or “poopsies.” Despite using contracts to get her way, Ursula has little regard for following her end of the bargain.

Her only weak point is the head, so it is best to use physical attacks on it. Try and get behind her head, and start bashing away at her. This can be done best by swimming over her head, and then come down. Occasionally Ursula will push Sora away from her head, so get as close to her as you can.

Although she used to live in the royal palace, she was banished from it and now seeks revenge on Triton. Ursula sees an opportunity to get her revenge when Triton’s daughter Ariel falls in love with a human. Now all she has to do is make sure Ariel can’t complete the contract that Ursula draws up for her…

Ursula’s motives are not pure – she wants to oust King Triton and become ruler of the sea people. The contract states that Ariel must give Ursula her voice (which is the part of Ariel that the human fell in love with) and in exchange, Ursula will make Ariel human for three days.

According to a real-life human lawyer, it is an unfortunate story about a naive 16-year-old rushing into a dodgy legal contract that should have been overturned in an instant, according to the ‘laws of the sea’. It’s just a shame Ariel didn’t know a crustacean with a law degree.

Remember in The Little Mermaid when Ariel signs Ursula’s contract, trading her voice for legs so she can pursue her ~one true love~ she’s met literally once?

And she is in fact perfectly capable of reading and writing, which we know because we watch her sign her name to the contract that seals her fate. So, Ariel is completely flipping literate and, in point of fact, has excellent penmanship!

When Prince Eric attempts to rescue Ariel, Ursula loses control of her magic shell and Ariel’s voice is restored. As Ariel answers, Prince Eric realizes that it has been her voice all along (“Part of Your World – Finale”).

Her kindness, bravery, and determination make her my favorite Disney princess and a great role model for young girls who want to grow up to become strong, confident, and independent women. Ariel shows us that we can aspire to something more, even if we don’t specifically know what we want.

1. Ariel is confident in herself. One of the things that I’ve always loved about the Disney Princesses is how so many of them are filled with self-confidence, and confidence in their own abilities. Ariel is wholly herself, on both sea and land, and I think her self-confidence makes her a great role model for girls.
