French Canadian/Indian people (also called métis) from Canada became the vanguard of non-native settlement in the Northwest. French was their common language and most had Iroquois, Ojibway (or other middle and eastern Native Canadian) wives or mothers.

While the United States is much larger than its northern neighbor in terms of GDP, the average income per capita is similar in both places. While people generally pay more in taxes in the United States, Canada offers superior social benefits.

Summary. Canada is cheaper than the US in some aspects, but not others. You’ll be paying less for health insurance and rent, but what you’ll pay in utilities, gas, and consumer goods will increase. And that’s if you can manage to get the visas required to work and live in Canada.

As a colony of Great Britain, Canada was swept up in the War of 1812 and was invaded a number of times by the Americans. The war was fought in Upper Canada, Lower Canada, on the Great Lakes and the Atlantic, and in the United States….War of 1812.

Britain effectively won the War of 1812 by successfully defending its North American colonies. But for the British, the war with America had been a mere sideshow compared to its life-or-death struggle with Napoleon in Europe.

It is quite easier to accept that Canada hasn’t lost a war, or is it? Canada did go on to take part in the Boer War, the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War, while it has sent units to take part in the global war on terror (GWOT) including in Afghanistan and Iraq.

France was more interested in the fur trade than in settling the land. The British hurt the French traders’ business when they bought fur from the Indians. However, by 1760 the French had lost Quebec and Montreal to the British. The French and Indian War ended after the British defeated the French in Quebec.

The Civil War would probably come along much sooner since the colder climate of Canada would not be suitable for farms and plantations found in the southern United States; Canada territory would be brought into the union as free states.

The United States declared its independence from Great Britain in 1776. The American Revolutionary War ended in 1783, with Great Britain recognizing U.S. independence. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1785.

The Treaty of Ghent was signed by British and American delegates on December 24, 1814, effectively ending the War of 1812. The Americans also lost the Battle of Queenston Heights in October. Nothing much happened along Lake Champlain and the American forces withdrew in late November.
