SUMMARY. Foxes treat different prey species in a variety of ways, eating, burying, or discarding them on the basis of preference. An incidence of active cannibalism by a fox is reported.

Foxes, like most mammals, are spontaneous ovulators, which means they have a fixed breeding season – more specifically, foxes are monestrous, meaning they have one breeding season per year. Consequently, even by killing a vixen’s litter, a dog fox could not bring her back into oestrous.

What eats a bear? The list of what eats a bear is short, as Apex predators and carnivores. Most other animals have more to fear. But tigers, other bears, wolves and especially humans have been known to attack and kill bears.

Bears. If a Black Bear or a Brown Bear is able to get close to a Fox or take it by surprise then it will eat it. Foxes are no match for their size, strength, and armament. These largest predators of North America will mostly scare foxes away from any competing food source.

Foxes and coyotes are natural enemies. Coyotes like many other carnivorous animals in the wild will kill and eat a fox to stay alive. Other canids that have been known to kill or eat foxes are Jackals, Hyenas, and even wild dogs.

The screech in the video is known as a “vixen’s cry”, and you’ll hear it most often around springtime, when foxes are out luring mates. It’s also used later in the season when unwanted visitors need to be chased away from young kits.

The best way to feed foxes in your garden is to try and replicate their natural diet. Primarily this means meat protein so leave out cooked or raw meat, tinned dog food, or specially-formulated fox food like Wild Things. Your foxes will also be pleased with treats like unsalted peanuts, fruit and cheese.
