Please note that Kern River currents are very strong at times and can be extremely dangerous. Do not leave children or dogs unattended at the river. The park is located about10 miles northeast of Bakersfield, off the Alfred Harrell Highway on the Lake Ming Road exit. Dogs must be on leash.

The Upper Kern River is between Lake Isabella and the Johnsondale Bridge and is part of the North Fork of the Kern Wild and Scenic River. Dispersed camping (outside of campgrounds) and campfires with permits are allowed in much of the area, but must be at least 25 feet from the river’s edge.

Guests can enjoy clean bathrooms and coin-operated showers. The campground is available for weddings, family reunions, and other group events.

Reservations are available any time prior to arrival at the campground, based on availability, and may be made up to one year in advance. One vehicle is included with each campsite reservation; 8 person maximum per campsite. Fees are non-refundable and must be paid in advance.

Area Status: Open The river’s edge supports large sycamores and willows. The close proximity makes the Lower Kern very popular with residents of Bakersfield.

Campfires or charcoal fires, are allowed, with a valid California Campfire Permit, in designated campgrounds and posted as “Exempt Areas” in the Forest Order 0513-17-14, Kern River District exhibit. Free Campfire Permits are available at Forest Service offices and www.preventwildfireca.org/Campfire-Permit.

• Extra beverages and Wine and Beer are ok to bring with you, no glass allowed, consumption of alcohol is not allowed before or on the river.

Kern River Valley wildlife expert Alison Sheehey said beavers were introduced to the area in the late 1800s by trappers and have lived in the Kern River ever since. However, water management practices in the river have made it a tough place for animals, she said.

Upper Kern River campgrounds is the area just north of Kernville up to the Johnsondale Bridge. This is also known as the Limestone Put-in. Most of these campgrounds are public campgrounds, but there are some private camping options available too.

Kernville is located approximately seven minutes from our Rafting Center. The Upper Kern flows right next to town alongside the park, and there are a number of restaurants, shops, bars and a few places to grab breakfast and coffee. Distance: Nine minutes from our Rafting Center.

There are three sections on the Kern River: Forks of the Kern. This is a Class V, multi-day wilderness rafting trip. Upper Kern. This is a half and full day section with various levels of rapids from Class III to Class V+. Lower Kern: This is a half day to two day section.

Lower Kern: This is a half day to two day section. Kern River Hiking: There are tons of different hiking options in the area. Most hikes are strenuous, but there are some milder and flatter hiking options as well.
