This is actually a good thing, as people who buy the bronze watches want them to look well used and some will actually speed up the tarnishing process using various chemicals. The bronze material is very durable and will hold up well for as long as you own it, but it is definitely a lot different than stainless steel.

While all three contain copper, the percentage is far lower in Brass and Bronze than in pure copper as alloying elements are mixed in. This reduces the cost of brass and bronze. Bronze is usually more expensive than brass, partly due to the processes required to manufacture bronze.

One simple test is to apply a magnet to the artwork and see if it sticks there. Iron is highly magnetic, and you’ll feel the pull in the magnet. If you set a magnet on bronze, it’ll fall off. Also, watch for patches of corrosion, because bronze doesn’t rust.

While stainless is prettier to look at with its mirrored finish, bronze has many good qualities going for it. When Stainless Steel is in a low oxygen environment, it begins to suffer what is known as crevice corrosion which is hard to see and detrimental to the metals strength.

Between both metals, bronze is not the inferior material in terms of its physical properties, in fact, on ornaments and in particular watch cases, it has the benefit of being more ‘scratch resistant’.

Bronze Maintenance:

1. Normal – Minor scratches and mineral streaking can be brushed out using a household 3M Scotch-BriteTM pad.
2. Extreme Cases – Deep scratches may be sanded out using sandpaper grades up to 220 and buffed. Brush the countertop in a circular pattern to recreate its original finish.

Small brass objects can be cleaned with a little toothpaste (not the gel type). Apply it with a soft, damp cloth or toothbrush, then rinse and dry.

Putting the watch in a bowl filled with soda and waiting for a short time is an excellent solution for cleaning the patina. You can even rub your watch directly with lemon. You will be amazed by the results.

Registered. weak acids such as lemon juice, ketchup or vinegar do help to remove the patina. a weekly polishing with a jewelry cloth might do the same without the mess or jeopardizing seals.

Simply adding a few squeezes of lemon juice to a small pile of baking soda (enough to form a soft paste), applying an even coat of the paste to the bronze watch, and then rubbing it away with a cloth after allowing it to sit for 20-30 minutes, will often do the trick.

Bronze, brass and copper cleaner

1. Step 1: Mix 2/3 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup flour in a glass bowl.
2. Step 2: Add 1/2 cup salt and stir.
3. Step 3: Spread on tarnished metal. Wait 1 to 2 hours.
4. Step 4: Rinse, dry and polish with a soft cloth and a dab of olive oil.

Keep Your Bronze Looking Its Best Regularly dust bronze statues and décor. If the dust is thick, rinse the piece in warm water to remove it, and then dry the metal thoroughly with a soft cloth. Store your bronze jewelry, coins, and valuables that aren’t on display in airtight plastic bags to reduce exposure to oxygen.

1. Combine equal amounts of flour and salt in a small dish, then add enough vinegar to make a paste.
2. Smear the paste onto the bronze pieces and let stand for about 30 minutes.
3. Wash the paste off under running water, then dry and buff with a clean soft cloth. Mix flour, vinegar and salt. Smear paste onto the bronze.

The dark or greenish brown patina that forms on bronze is highly desirable and should be preserved; so don’t use metal polish or solvents on any bronze or any water on indoor bronzes. Dusting alone should suffice. A dull patina can be revived by a very light coating of microcrystalline wax.

If you want to prevent tarnish, keep your bronze item stored or displayed in an area with low humidity and protected from dust and other corrosives. Avoid handling the item with bare hands, and don’t let the bronze piece come into contact with paint or fabrics.
