There is a black hole behind every quasar, but not every black hole is a quasar. So yes, in a way, a quasar is simply one face a black hole may show. Today, we know that not only are these objects quite distant, they are also powered by accretion onto a supermassive black hole.

Due to a phenomenon called “relativistic Doppler beaming,” gas in the disk that’s moving toward us makes that side of the disk appear brighter, the opposite side darker. This effect disappears when we’re directly above or below the disk because, from that angle, none of the gas is moving directly toward us.

As a particle orbits closer and closer, its velocity increases, as velocity increases frictional heating increases as more and more of the particle’s potential energy (relative to the black hole) is radiated away; the accretion disk of a black hole is hot enough to emit X-rays just outside the event horizon.

There are four types of black holes: stellar, intermediate, supermassive, and miniature. The most commonly known way a black hole forms is by stellar death.

A black hole is an object whose gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape it. Astronomers have long thought that black holes come in just two kinds, the “stellar” and the “supermassive.” The type depends on the weight of the black hole, or more specifically, its mass.

So far, astronomers have identified three types of black holes: stellar black holes, supermassive black holes and intermediate black holes.
